Ohio State Wins Fourth in a Row with Victory Over Irish

The Ohio State men’s hockey team, behind a goal and an assist from Kyle Hood, downed Notre Dame 4-1 Friday at the Joyce Center.

The win, Ohio State’s fourth in a row, moves the Buckeyes’ record to 6-5-1 on the year and 5-4-1 in the CCHA. The Irish drop to 3-7-1 on the year and 2-4-1 in the league.

The teams traded power-play goals in the first period to head into intermission tied at 1. Matt McIlvane got the Buckeyes on the board 1:57 into the game, putting in the rebound of a Sean Collins shot following a Domenic Maiani face off win in the ND zone. The Irish tied the game at 17:20, when Matt Amado put in a loose puck. The goal ended Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso’s shutout streak at 167:16. The Buckeyes had 11 shots on goal, the Irish three.

Ohio State scored twice in the first 3:16 of the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Hood scored at 2:17, putting in the rebound of a Dave Barton shot, with Matt Waddell picking up the second assist. Just 59 seconds later, Mathieu Beaduoin coming off the bench into the Irish zone, one-timed a Kenny Bernard pass over the blocker of ND goalie David Brown for his fifth goal of the year. The Buckeyes outshot the Irish 14-4 in the period.

Tom Fritsche added to the Buckeye lead 11:38 into the third period with a power-play goal. After Hood kept the puck in at the blue line, he passed to Andrew Schembri. Schembri’s shot was saved, but Fritsche put in the rebound for his fourth goal of the season. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period 8-7.

The Buckeyes outshot the Irish in the game 34-15. Caruso had 14 saves in 60 minutes in net, while Brown had 29 saves.

Ohio State scored twice on 10 power-play chances in the game and stopped the Irish on 8 of 9 opportunities.

The teams will end the two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Notre Dame, Ind.
