In a non-conference battle, St. Cloud State University charted a 4-1 win over Brown University (2-5-0, 2-4-0 ECAC) at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The victory improved SCSU’s record to 5-7-1, 3-6-1 WCHA.
In the game, SCSU dominated play in the first period as it outshot Brown 16-3. The scoreboard said otherwise as the two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. SCSU sophomore forward Marty Mjelleli scored his first career goal at St. Cloud with a tally at 2:52 of the first. Assists on the play were credited to Billy Hengen and Justin Fletcher.
Brown roared back with a power-play goal at 8:15 of the first period by Matt Vokes. He was assisted on the play by Antonin Roux and Brian Ihnacak.
In the second period, SCSU iced the game with a pair of goals to make it 3-1. SCSU senior Joe Jensen scored his eighth goal of the season at 12:06 with assists from Brock Hooton and Hengen. SCSU senior defender T.J. McElroy notched his second goal of the season at 14:58 of the second with assists from Jensen and Andrew Gordon. To complete the scoring, Gordon posted his 15th point of the season with a goal at 17:13 of the third on the power play. Hengen, who had three assists in the game, added an assist along with Jensen, who ended the game with one goal and two assists.
In the nets, Bobby Goepfert gained the victory and improved his season total to 5-5-1. He made 20 saves in the contest and allowed only one goal on the power play. Adam D’Alba had 28 saves for the Bears. On the power play, SCSU was 1 of 5 and Brown was 1 of 6. SCSU outshot the Bears 32-21 in the contest.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 26, with a 7:07 p.m. drop at the National Hockey Center.
