Junior Matt Sweazey’s goal at 11:07 of the third period broke a tie game and Alabama-Huntsville went on to defeat American International, 5-3 in the third-place game of the RPI Hockey Holiday Tournament. The Chargers improve to 2-7-1 overall while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-6-2.
Knotted at 3-3, Sweazey cut across the front of the net off a pass from junior Scott Kalinchuk, putting the puck past the reach of AIC goalie Tom Fenton.
Sophomore Tom Train closed out the scoring for the Chargers off a feed from behind the net from classmate Cale Tanaka at 19:02.
UAH opened the scoring at the 16:56 of the first period on Train’s first goal of the contest. Tanaka passed the puck to Train, who came around the right side of the net and slid a shot under Fenton. Senior Tyler Hilbert was also credited with an assist.
The Yellow Jackets tied things up just one minute into the second frame as senior Bryan Jurynec redirected a shot off the stick of sophomore Mike McMillan past Chargers goalie Cameron Talbot. Sophomore Frankie DeAngelis also earned an assist.
The Chargers broke the tie at 7:18 after a goal by Andrew Coburn. Junior Joe Federoff and Brandon Roshko received assists. Sophomore Kevin Morrison made it a two-goal UAH advantage at 9:10 after centering a pass from junior Josh Murray.
McMillan cut the AIC deficit late in the frame after he corralled a quick pass from senior Brent Griffin and put it past Talbot’s glove-side at 16:51
A goal by senior Jereme Tendler tied things up at 11:07 of the third period. After finding the puck through traffic in front, he lifted it past Talbot. McMillan and freshman T.J. Smith were credited with the assists.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday when they host Atlantic Hockey foe Air Force at 7:05pm. The Chargers are idle until December 7th when they head to Bemidji State for a 7:35pm match-up.
