The No. 14 St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team suffered a tough 3-2 loss at home against fourth ranked Denver on Dec. 7.
The Huskies will look to avenge the loss on Saturday, Dec. 8, as the two squads will meet again with a 7:07 p.m. start at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
After a defensive battle in the first period that resulted in a 0-0 deadlock, Denver posted a 1-0 lead in the game on a goal by Jesse Martin at 3:54 of the second period. Anthony Maiani was credited with the assist on the goal that was decided after a replay review.
In the third period, the Huskies broke the shutout with sophomore forward Andreas Nodl’s sixth goal of the season at 1:05. He was assisted on the play by sophomore defender Garrett Raboin and senior forward Matt Hartman.
The even score didn’t stand for long, as DU charged back to take a 2-1 lead at 1:30 of the third with a goal by Rhett Rakhshani. He was assisted on the play by Andrew Thomas.
Once again, the Huskies roared back into the fray with an outstanding effort by freshman forward Garrett Roe, who roofed a shot past DU goalie Peter Mannino. Roe’s goal at 3:27 of the third was assisted by junior defender John Swanson and Raboin.
This marked the 12th consecutive game that Roe has charted a point, which equals the 12-game point streak notched by Mark Hartigan at the start of the 2001-02 season. Roe has scored at least one point in every game since Oct. 20, and he has a total of 20 points during that stretch. The goal was Roe’s 11th of the season.
To end the contest’s scoring, Brock Trotter tallied the GWG at 6:05, with assists from Tyler Bozak and Chris Nutini.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Pioneers 27-26 as sophomore netminder Jase Weslosky had 23 saves in the game. Mannino added 25 saves for DU in the game. Denver was 0-1 on the power play and SCSU was 0-4 on the power. The Huskies have not allowed a power play goal over the last three games.
