The St. Lawrence University Saints scored four goals in the third period to beat the No. 7 University of New Hampshire Wildcats 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.
Thirteen different players from St. Lawrence recorded points in the win, including multiple point efforts from Brock McBride, Mike McKenzie, and Aaron Bogosian.
The Saints entered the third period trailing 3-2. Just 1:02 into the period however, Zach Miskovic tied the game. Sean Flanagan started the passing sequence, and found McKenzie, who passed the puck in front of the net to Miskovic, who got it past UNH goalie Brian Foster.
New Hamphire quickly got two goals by two freshmen to gain a two goal lead. Danny Vranek netted his first goal of the season after receiving a behind the net pass from Kevin Kapstad. 24 seconds later, Danny Dries scored his second goal of the game, redirecting a Phil DeSimone pass into the back of net.
After that, it was all St. Lawrence. With UNH’s Bobby Butler in the box for slashing, Matt Generous took a shot that ended up right in front of the goal line, and McBride knocked the loose puck in at 12:54.
Jared Keller then pulled the Saints into a tie. Jordan Hack took the initial shot from the slot, and Foster made the save, but Keller grabbed the rebound and shot it into the open right side of the net.
Kevin DeVergilio redirected a Charlie Giffin shot for the game-winner at 17:34. The Wildcats pulled Foster with 48 seconds remaining in regulation, but were unable to convert.
St. Lawrence came out strong in the first period and went up 2-0. McBride scored off the rebound of a McKenzie shot from the point, and then Bogosian took a shot from the blue line that got past Foster.
New Hampshire’s Craig Switzer got UNH on the board at 18:44 of the period on a power play. Defenseman Brad Flaishans passed the puck to Matt Fornataro, who then passed to Switzer in the high slot.
New Hampshire scored two goals in the second to take the lead. Dries scored his first of the game off a deflection from a DeSimone pass, and Peter LeBlanc set up a rush with his linemates Bobby Butler and Jerry Pollastrone to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead going into the final period. Butler scored off a Pollastrone pass after a quick rush up the left boards.
“We battled back after we gave up the goal early and played very well to get up 5-3,” UNH coach Dick Umile said. “At that point, they were hungrier than we were.”
“Our guys kept coming and we got a couple big breaks, big goal by Keller took it hard to the net and anything can happen,” said St. Lawrence coach Joe Marsh. “We got a big break here at the end and hung on.”
