The Colgate Raiders (10-10-4, 4-5-3 ECAC) rolled over the Brown Bears (1-14-1, 1-8-3 ECAC), 5-0, on Saturday, after coming off of a 6-1 loss to Yale on Friday night
The Raiders dominated play from the start, and it was obvious that the Bears just couldn’t keep up. In the first period, Colgate attacked the net, pummeling Brown netminder Dan Rosen with shots. Rosen was able to hold off the onslaught for half the period, but at 10:25, the Raiders began their scoring streak.
Colgate captain Jesse Winchester gained control of the puck and shot from the left side. Rosen came up with the save, but was unable to control the rebound. The puck bounced out directly to Mark Anderson’s stick at the right dot, and Anderson sent the puck into the net, beating Rosen stick side.
With just 31 seconds left in the period, the Raiders added some insurance with a goal from Jason Williams. After working the puck deep in the zone during a power play resulting from a holding penalty on Brown’s Sean Hurley, David McIntyre found Anderson at the point, and his wrist shot made it through heavy traffic and found the net courtesy of a Williams’ deflection.
Colgate carried the momentum into the second period, and it took only five minutes and nine seconds to tally another goal. Just 24 seconds into a power play, Peter Bogdanich cycled the puck out of the right corner and found Winchester in the slot with a quick pass. Winchester turned with the puck and took a backhand shot that snuck under Rosen’s pad on the left side.
The Raiders made the score 4-0 with just 24 seconds left in the period with a quick wrist shot from McIntyre.
In the third period, McIntyre did it again, only 1:23 into the stanza. Williams broke the puck out of the zone with a pass to Tom Riley in neutral territory. Riley made a nice cross-ice pass to McIntyre, who went streaking down the left side. McIntyre took the puck on his forehand, then deked to his backhand to score five-hole.
The win was important for the Raiders, who were in eighth place in the ECAC going into tonight.
“This win was important,” Colgate coach Don Vaughan said. “We are going into a big weekend, and it’s tough going into that series without a win. We know that every win is important, and every point is valuable now, and we have to continue to find a way to string some wins together and get back into this race.”
Colgate was 3-8 on the power play, while Brown was 0-5. Colgate’s Mark Dekanich made only 18 saves for the night, but that was enough to earn the shutout and tie the Colgate record for career shutouts with eight.
Both teams are back in action next weekend. The Raiders will play a home-and-home series against Cornell, while Brown takes on Harvard and Dartmouth at home.
