The Colgate Raiders scored with one minute left in overtime to propel them to a 4-3 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sunday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
It was the second overtime loss in as many games for the Bobcats (17-11-4, 9-7-4 ECAC), who lost to Cornell, 3-2 in overtime, Friday night.
On the winning play, Peter Bogdanich came in on a two-on-one with Tyler Burton when he received the pass and roofed the shot for the goal. Jesse Winchester sent a breakout pass to Burton to start the play, and Burton sent a pass under the stick of a Bobcat defender to Bogdanich for the victory.
“Obviously a disappointing loss,” said Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold. “I thought we played very poorly tonight, just in terms of our defensive mindset and lack of commitment.”
The Bobcats’ Greg Holt opened the scoring with a power play goal 7:50 into the contest. Deep in the corner, Jamie Bates sent the puck out to the blue line. Holt picked up the pass and skated into the slot and rifled a shot through the five hole of Colgate’s Mark Dekanich.
The Raiders (14-13-5, 8-8-4 ECAC) answered just under a minute later with David McIntyre’s breakaway goal. On a turnover at the blue line, McIntyre picked up the puck and skated in on Quinnipiac’s Bud Fisher. McIntyre went to his forehand, made Fisher commit, and pulled it to his backhand and under the pad for the goal.
The Bobcats once again took the lead with a Brandon Wong power-play goal. Again, Holt played a part in the goal scoring by ripping the shot from the blue line, which was saved by Dekanich but pounced on by Wong for the rebound goal at 8:04 of the second.
Colgate tied it at 2 when Fisher was unable to control a rebound and Brian Day found the puck loose in the crease. Tom Riley took the initial shot from the right circle and Day banged home the rebound.
Colgate took its first lead of the game when Zach Hansen mishandled the puck behind the net and Tyler Burton streaked in to pressure the defensemen. Burton corralled the puck, skated in front of the net and put it under the crossbar for the 3-2 lead and his 18th goal of the year.
Quinnipiac answered again on the power play for the third time. This time it was Bryan Leitch who ripped a shot over the glove side of Dekanich. Leitch intercepted a clear by Colgate and fired from the left circle and under the crossbar.
Dekanich made 26 saves in the winning effort, while Fisher made 14 in the loss. The Bobcats went 3-for-5 on the power play and killed off all seven of their penalties.
The Bobcats are currently on a four-game losing streak and 1-4-1 in their last six.
“We’re struggling; our confidence isn’t there,” said Pecknold.
