Balisy, Western Michigan win shootout after tie with Notre Dame

Chase Balisy scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give No. 8 Western Michigan the extra point in the CCHA standings after a 3-3 tie with No. 11 Notre Dame on Friday.

The Broncos slipped to three points behind first-place Miami, which defeated Lake Superior State on Friday. The Fighting Irish are five points back with three games to play.

Austin Wuthrich’s goal with 8:50 remaining for Notre Dame (19-12-2, 15-8-2-1 CCHA) tied the game at 3-3. Nolan LaPorte gave the Broncos (18-8-7, 14-6-5-3) the lead earlier in the third period.

Justin Kovacs and Will Kessel scored first-period goals for Western Michigan, which got 25 saves from Frank Slubowski.

David Gerths and Bryan Rust answered for the Irish, who trailed three times. Steven Summerhays stopped 22 shots for Notre Dame.
