PRINCETON, N.J. — Sally Butler tallied two goals and an assist, and Brianna Leahy scored twice to lead Princeton to a 6-1 victory over Penn State Tuesday night.
Denna Laing opened the scoring at 3:07, and Leahy tallied her first of the night at 7:21, as the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.
After Penn State coach Josh Brandwene called a time out, Amy Petersen cut the deficit in half just 1:21 later, as Peterson won a battle in the crease and pushed the puck past goaltender Kimberly Newell.
But at 16:03 of the first, the momentum shifted again for good, as Ali Pankowski tallied on a blast from the point on the power play, and Leahy tallied her second of the game two and a half minutes later, giving the Tigers a commanding 4-1 lead.
Butler increased the Tigers lead twice, tallying in each of the final two stanzas.
Newell improved to 8-8-3, stopping 15 of 16 shots in the victory for Princeton. Nicole Paniccia made 15 saves in the first period for Penn State before being replaced by Celine Whitlinger, who made 29 saves.
