Minnesota-Duluth wins fifth straight over Minnesota, sending Gophers to first 0-2 start in 16 years

MINNEAPOLIS — Jared Thomas and Austin Farley scored second-period goals for No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth, which beat No. 15 Minnesota 3-1 on Friday.

Kasimir Kaskisuo made 23 saves for the Bulldogs (1-1).

Minnesota’s Brent Gates Jr. cut the lead to 2-1 in the third period, but Minnesota-Duluth’s Dominic Toninato answered 32 seconds later to restore the Bulldogs’ two-goal lead.

Eric Schierhorn stopped 32 shots for Minnesota (0-2), which lost its first two games of the season for the first time since 1999.

Including knocking the Gophers out of the NCAA tournament in a first-round game last season, the Bulldogs have won five straight against Minnesota.
