PRINCETON, N.J. — Karlie Lund scored twice and added an assist, and Kelsey Koelzer tallied two points as Princeton defeated Yale 5-1 on Saturday.
The Tigers’ offense gained the momentum early in the game, netting three consecutive power-play goals.
Stephanie Sucharda opened the scoring at 13:17 of the first, as Hilary Lloyd and Jamie McDonell set up Sucharda for a wrister in the slot for her second goal of the year.
With 27 seconds to play in the first, Koelzer skated the puck into the zone along the right side boards, and just as she was being tripped from behind managed to drag the puck and fire a snap shot top shelf for her 12th goal of the season and fourth goal of the weekend.
With the Tigers on the power play again at 3:55 of the second, Lund potted her first of the game on the rebound of a Koelzer shot set up by McDonell as Molly Contini provided a screen at the top of the crease.
At 14:33, the Bulldogs gained life with a power play of their own as Julia Yetman took a shot that went wide of the net and bounced right to Hanna Astrom, who one-timed the puck past Kimberly Newell to get the Bulldogs on the board. But in spite of outshooting the Tigers 20-6 in the final two stanzas, the Bulldogs were unable to beat Newell more than once.
Princeton made the most of its limited shots on net in the third, scoring twice on four shots. First, Lund netted her second of the game and ninth of the year at 3:19 as Cassidy Tucker and Kimiko Marinacci set up Lund in the slot for a nifty backhand that beat goaltender Kyra O’Brien over the blocker. Then at 19:11, Fiona McKenna corralled the puck in the defensive zone and skated the length of the ice unassisted, snapping a bottle popper from the circle for the Tigers’ fifth and final goal of the game.
Newell made 23 saves for the Tigers, improving to 10-3-1. Bulldogs goaltender Hanna Mandl made 14 saves in the first period before being replaced by O’Brien, who finished with six saves in the final 40 minutes.
