Black Friday brings chaos in the stores. It also brought chaos on the ice as four ranked teams lost amongst the non-tournament games on the day after Thanksgiving. Extra play also highlighted the day as four games went into overtime.
Niagara 0, American International 0 (OT)
Perhaps the offenses were put to sleep by too large of a turkey dinner the night before as Niagara and American International played to a scoreless, overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey contest. Alex Murray (AIC) made 28 saves and Jackson Teichroeb (Niagara) made 26 saves in their respective shutouts. Both teams had three power play opportunities.
Merrimack 5, Providence 2
Merrimack scored all their goals in the third period to defeat Providence, 5-2, in a Hockey East game. Tyler Irvine scored the first and last (a shorthanded empty netter) and also notched two assists. Drew Vogler made 21 saves for the win at home.
Northeastern 6, No. 11 Minnesota 4
Northeastern upset #11 Minnesota, 6-4, thanks to four unanswered third period goals. Justin Kloos scored a hat trick for the Golden Gophers, which gave the visitors a 4-2 lead early in the second. However, Dylan Sikura scored his own hat trick with two in the third as well as an assist to give the Huskies the win.
Bowling Green 3, Alaska Anchorage 3 (OT)
Bowling Green and Alaska Anchorage played to a 3-3 overtime tie as far as the NCAA is concerned. However, being a WCHA contest, they went to the 3 vs. 3 second overtime. Mitch McLain scored to give Bowling Green the two points in the standings while Anchorage had to settle for one point.
Omaha 2, Northern Michigan 2 (OT)
Tyler Vesel scored midway through the second period to give Omaha a 2-2 overtime tie against Northern Michigan. Omaha scored first on a goal by Justin Parizek before the home team came back with two straight by Dominik Shine and Troy Loggins before the opening period ended. Those three first period goals came in a span of 1:17.
Mercyhurst 5, Canisius 1
Despite being outshot 40-26, Mercyhurst defeated Canisius, 5-1, in an Atlantic Hockey match up. Five different players scored for the visitors. Colin DeAugustine made 39 saves for the win. The win moves Mercyhurst into a third place tie with Canisius.
Lake Superior State 3, No. 16 Michigan 1
Lake Superior State went on the road and beat Michigan, 3-1. After letting up the first goal on a power play in the second period, the Lakers’ Josh Nenadal tied it up 23 seconds later. Luke Morgan got the game winner at 17:03 in the third with Gus Correale clinching it with a shorthanded empty net score. Gordon Defiel stopped 29 shots for the win.
Princeton 4, No. 10 Bemidji State 1
Princeton stunned #10 Bemidji State, 4-1, on the road for their first win of the season. The Tigers scored twice in the second. After Brendan Harris got one back for the Beavers in the third, Princeton scored twice again to put the game away. Ryan Kuffner led off and finished the scoring. Colton Phinney made 35 saves for the win.
Michigan State 4, No. 5 North Dakota 3
#5 North Dakota lost at home to Michigan State, 4-3. After letting up the first goal, the Spartans scored four straight, the first two by Jerad Rosburg, before hanging on for the victory. Tyson Jost scored twice 31 seconds apart in the middle of the third for North Dakota’s failed comeback attempt.
Arizona State 5, Rensselaer 3
Thanks to two third period goals, Arizona State defeated Rensselaer, 5-3. Wade Murphy scored for the lead, and Robbie Baillargeon got the clincher. Rensselaer led 1-0 and 2-1 before the Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead. Rensselaer’s Jacob Hayhurst tied it up late in the second.
No. 2 Denver 4, Air Force 3 (OT)
Denver survived a scare, beating Air Force on the road in overtime, 4-3. Jarid Lukosevicius got the game winner at 2:15 of the extra period. Denver kept taking one goal leads in regulation play only to have Air Force tie it up each time.
Wisconsin 2, Colorado College 1
Wisconsin eked out a 2-1 win over Colorado College. Wisconsin scored twice on goals by Will Johnson and Grant Besse within 1:24 late in the second to reverse a 1-0 first period deficit. The Badgers held host Colorado College to just 12 shots in the game as Jack Berry stopped 11 of them.
