No. 10 Wisconsin 4, Merrimack 1
With the game tied 1-1 with eight minutes to play in the third period, the Badgers exploded with three goals in just 39 seconds to blow it open for the win. After Seamus Malin’s power-play goal at 12:01, Max Zimmer scored 14 seconds later, and Ryan Wagner lit the lamp 25 seconds after that to put the game out of reach. Earlier in the period, Tyler Irvine had tied it up with Merrimack’s lone goal.
No. 17 Quinnipiac 3, Vermont 2 (OT)
After Liam Coughlin scored for Vermont to make it 1-0 at 3:23 of the second period, Quinnipiac responded almost immediately, as Odeen Tufto scored 35 seconds later. This set the stage for a see-saw battle, as Quinnipiac took the lead late in the period, only to have Craig Puffer tie it up midway through the period. But after the Bobcats lost in overtime to BU last Sunday, they turned the table on tonight’s Hockey East opponent: Tufto scored his second goal of the game at 2:27 of OT for the win.
No. 14 Northeastern 3, RIT 3 (OT)
Despite outshooting RIT by a decisive 44-27 margin, Northeastern had to battle back from a 3-0 deficit late in the second period to come away with the tie. After Erik Brown scored two of the three goals for the Tigers, Lincoln Griffin, Garrett Cockerill, and Dylan Sikura scored for the Huskies, with the final coming on a power play with just 2:40 in regulation. Although outshot dramatically through 60 minutes, RIT had the only three shots of the scoreless overtime period.
Sacred Heart 3, Connecticut 1
Connecticut piled up 45 shots against their cross-state rivals tonight but still dug itself a 3-0 hole and never managed to climb out. Going 0-for-5 on the power play was one issue, as was the goaltending of Sacred Heart netminder Adam Huska, who made 44 saves. Matt Tugnutt got the game winner for the home team with his first collegiate goal.
Massachusetts 3, American International 1
Playing against their nearest geographic opponent, UMass scored the first two goals in the first period and never looked back. Freshman forward and Amherst native John Leonard factored in all three Minutemen tallies and now has three goals and four assists for seven points in his first four collegiate games. Matt Murray made 23 saves for the victors.
No. 12 UMass-Lowell 5, Omaha 2
The River Hawks saw their 3-0 lead dwindle to a one-goal margin late in the second period, but Kenny Hausinger scored at 7:47 of the third period to give the hosts some breathing room, and Tyler Mueller sealed it with an empty-net goal. John Edwardh and Croix Evingson each ended up with a goal and an assist. For Evingson, it was both his first collegiate goal and the eventual game winner.
No. 20 New Hampshire 5, Colgate 3
With this win against Colgate, the Wildcats have their first 4-0-0 start to a season since the 2012-2013 season. Ten different skaters ended up on the scoresheet for UNH. The top line of senior Michael McNicholas centering senior Jason Salvaggio and freshman Charlie Kelleher led the way with a total of three goals and four assists. In the weekend sweep of Colgate, the line scored 13 points.
