MARQUETTE, Mich. — Joseph Nardi’s goal with just 36 seconds remaining in the third period proved to be the difference as the Northern Michigan Wildcats managed to defeat 7th-ranked Minnesota State 4-3.
The Mavericks got out to the early lead on Jake Jaremko’s goal at 4:30 of the first period. However, Northern Michigan responded with goals from Troy Loggins and Darien Craighead to take a short lived 2-1 lead late in the second frame. Riese Zmolek provided the equalizer for Minnesota State with his goal at 17:46 of the third.
In the third period, the Wildcats would retake the lead on Robbie Payne’s goal at 3:02 but would give it right back when Minnesota State’s Parker Tuomie scored to make it a 3-3 tie at 14:50. Northern Michigan’s Atte Tolvanen stopped 26 shots en route to collecting the win in the net for the Wildcats who ran their record to 11-8-2 while MSU fell to 13-6-0.
