Dávid Hrenák made 30 saves, including stopping a penalty shot early in the third period to preserve a slim 1-0 lead, and Patrick Newell scored twice, once short-handed, and chipped in an assist as St. Cloud State defeated Miami, 4-0, sweeping the weekend series and moving into sole possession of first in the NCHC. The Huskies got on the board at 3:48 of the second period as Judd Peterson worked a give-and-go with Nick Poehling. Peterson carried the puck over the blue line and cut toward his right toward the slot, dropping the puck behind him for Poehling, who quickly wristed a shot that handcuffed goalie Chase Munroe and beat him under his left arm. Newell made it 2-0 at 10:03 of the third on a seemingly harmless play, beating Munroe top corner stick side with a quick shot from the left faceoff circle. Newell then made it 3-0 with a short-handed empty-net goal at 16:08, lifting a snap shot in from the neutral zone. Peterson added an empty-netter short-handed at 17:52, wristing a quick shot in from the blue line. Hrenák stopped a penalty shot attempt by Carson Meyer at 4:14 of the third. Meyer got the attempt on what seemed like a very minor play by defenseman Jimmy Schuldt, who got the blade of his stick up on Meyer’s chest during Meyer’s breakaway. On the penalty shot, Meyer tried to shoot short side on Hrenák’s blocker side from the hashmarks, but Hrenák made the stop. Hrenák also kept Miami 0-for-4 on the power play.
