The Falcons’ Adam Berkle scored a short-handed goal in the second period to break a 2-2 tie, and Pierre-Luc Mercier doubled their advantage three minutes later.

Sean Flanagan pulled the Mavericks (3-4, 1-2 WCHA) within a goal in the third period, but the Falcons (5-2-2, 3-0) held on.

Minnesota State’s Teddy Blueger opened the scoring just 2:08 into the game with a power-play goal after Matt Pohlkamp was sent off the ice for slashing. Bowling Green evened the score about two minutes later with a goal by Brent Tate. Sixteen penalty minutes were assessed in the first period, 12 of them on the Mavericks.

Minnesota State had an opportunity to take the lead in the second period when the Falcons’ Marcus Perrier was assessed a major and a game misconduct for contact to the head.

Instead, the Mavericks were held scoreless during the five-minute power play and gave up a short-handed goal when goaltender Stephon Williams lost his footing and fell on the ice, giving Dan DeSalvo a wide-open net as the Falcons gained a 2-1 lead.

The Mavericks answered back just 41 seconds later with a Johnny McInnis tally.

The Mavericks replaced Williams with Cole Huggins after Mercier scored the Falcons’ fourth goal on 12 shots.
