CANTON, N.Y. — St. Lawrence shut out Colgate 5-0 Friday night at Appleton Arena as Colgate failed to score for the third straight game.

The Saints improve to 5-2-1 in ECAC play, while Colgate fell to 1-5 in the conference.

Colgate head coach Greg Fargo described his squad’s lack of finding the back of the net after the game.

“It’s not a secret that we have not scored a goal in three games,” said Fargo. “At this point, we’ll take one any way we can.”

St. Lawrence opened the scoring at 3:22 of the first period. A scramble in front of the net resulted in a loose puck that Kennedy Marchment poked home for her seventh goal of the year.

Fargo felt his team’s start was partially to blame for score.

“Any time you spot a team a couple goals early in the game, that’s the result you are going to get,” he said.

Kirsten Padalis put the Saints up 2-0 with a power-play goal at 14:42 of the first period. She received a pass from Kayla Raniwsky and fired a slap shot from the point that beat Colgate goalie Ashlynn Rando high on the glove side.

Brooke Webster then scored her tenth goal of the season just 31 seconds into the second period when she fired a wrist shot from the slot past Rando on the blocker side to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage.

St. Lawrence coach Chris Wells was obviously pleased with his team’s effort.

“I thought Colgate outplayed us in the first two minutes and we were lucky to be up by two after the first,” said Wells. “The team did a good job regrouping in between the first and second.”

A Colgate power play gave the Raiders an opportunity to close the gap, but Jackie Wand put the Saints up 4-0 instead on a shorthanded goal.

“Jess [Hon] made a nice saucer pass right to my stick and I just finished off the play,” said Wand.

Abbey McRae’s goal at 18:27 of the second gave the Saints a 5-0 lead as her snap shot from the left hashmarks beat Rando high blocker.

Neither team scored in the third period and the combination of Carmen MacDonald and Brooke Wolejko made 27 saves to record the shutout for St. Lawrence.

Fargo was disappointed following the loss, saying his team did not execute their game plan and failed to capitalize on power play chances.

“I didn’t think we did a whole lot of things we prepared for,” said Fargo.
