Two more CCHA points were there for Miami’s taking on Saturday night, and the RedHawks netted four goals in the final period to skate away with a 6-2 victory over visiting Alaska-Fairbanks.

After Friday night’s tie, the RedHawks (12-3-1, 7-2-1) scored three power-play goals as junior Mike Kompon ran his point-scoring streak to 14 games with two goals and an assist.

The Nanooks (3-7-2, 2-6-2 CCHA) took an early advantage, 1-0, when Ryan Campbell scored his third goal of the season at 2:24 of the first period. Jordan Hendry and Jason Grinevitch assisted on UAF’s first goal.

However, the RedHawks quickly evened the game when sophomore Joe Pomaranski, recently converted to forward, pounded at a loose puck in the crease for his second strike of the season. Creating the goal by breaking out on a 2-on-1 and taking the initial shot was senior Danny Stewart .

The momentum continued to swing in Miami’s favor when junior Greg Hogeboom scored his team-leading sixth power-play goal at 10:03. Hogeboom’s shot from the right wing was made possible when junior Derek Edwardson and freshman Andy Greene played some cat-and-mouse with the UAF defenders at the blue line.

Staked to a 2-1 advantage, Miami did not manage to score in the second period, but neither did the Nanooks. Fortunately for the RedHawks, the third stanza was a different story, as they rattled off four unanswered goals.

Kompon used some nifty stickwork to score his ninth goal of the season at 6:05, giving the RedHawks a 3-1 lead and extending his point-scoring streak.

A little over two minutes later, senior Nick Jardine stuffed home his own missed shot for his 10th goal of the season. Jardine’s goal was unassisted, but Hogeboom’s second power-play goal of the game at 11:40 was not, as Kompon and freshman Matt Davis each recorded assists.

Kompon was not finished scoring, however, as he proved at 13:23 when he went top cheese with a wrist shot to give Miami a 6-1 lead for his second goal of the game.

The Nanooks narrowed the gap to 6-2 with a power-play goal from Kelly Czuy at 17:50, but Miami finished off the final 2:10 for the victory.

Miami senior David Burleigh made 31 saves in a winning effort, while UAF goalie Preston McKay stopped 33 Miami shots.
