St. Cloud State got back in the win column with a 7-0 win at Michigan Tech on Saturday. The win improves SCSU’s record to 3-6-1, 2-5-1 WCHA while Michigan Tech falls to 2-9-1, 1-4-1 WCHA.<\/p>\n

“Last night we fell a little short (in a 3-2 OT loss at MTU), and tonight we wanted to send a message,” SCSU’s Casey Borer said.<\/p>\n

St. Cloud charged out to a fast lead in the first period with a power-play goal by Justin Fletcher at 2:08. Assists were credited on the play by Billy Hengen and Brock Hooton.<\/p>\n

SCSU padded its first period lead with a goal by Andrew Gordon at 7:41 of the first with assists from Joe Jensen and Matt Stephenson. Junior captain Borer scored his first career goal at 17:03 to complete the first-period scoring. Jensen and Fletcher both charted assists on Borer’s goal. SCSU dominated play in the first period outshooting the MTU squad 13-2.<\/p>\n

In the second period, Hengen continued his solid weekend with a rebound goal at 5:25. Assists on the play were posted by Matt Stephenson and Gordon. SCSU added a fifth goal in the second period as Jensen scored on the power play at 15:35. The lone assist was credited to Hooton.<\/p>\n

SCSU notched goal number six at 18:29 of the second as Konrad Reeder rolled one past Michigan Tech goalie Michael-Lee Teslak. The goal was Reeder’s first of the 2005-06 season. John Swanson gained the assist on the play. After two periods, SCSU held a 23-6 shot advantage over Michigan Tech. <\/p>\n

In the third period, St. Cloud struck again to make it 7-0 at 2:02 on the power play with a well-crafted goal by sophomore Matt Hartman. Fletcher and goaltender Bobby Goepfert notched assists on the play. The assist for Goepfert was his first as a Husky.<\/p>\n

“I was happy for the guys,” SCSU coach Bob Motzko said. “Our guys really played within their systems throughout the night.”<\/p>\n

SCSU finished the game with 34 shots on goal and held Michigan Tech to just 14 shots in the game. On the power play, SCSU was 4-of-10 and MTU was 0-of-8. It was SCSU’s first shutout and highest goal total since a 10-0 win over Yale on Oct. 30, 2004.<\/p>\n

Next weekend, St. Cloud will host North Dakota on Nov. 18-19 at the National Hockey Center. Meanwhile, Michigan Tech will travel to face No. 1 Colorado College.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
