Hobey Baker Award finalist Peter Sejna signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Blues on Sunday and quickly made an impact at the top level.

Sejna, who played three seasons at Colorado College, scored a power-play goal in his first game for the Blues, beating Colorado goalie Patrick Roy in the second period of a 5-2 loss in Denver, just 70 miles from school.

“It was nice to get my first goal against probably the greatest goalie in the history of hockey,” Sejna told The Gazette of Colorado Springs. “It was maybe lucky, but I was where I needed to be, in the right spot, and it came right to me and I got a piece of it.”

He is not eligible to play in the NHL playoffs, so his next shot at NHL action will be in training camp.

Sejna, the WCHA player of the year, led the nation with 82 points this season, and his decision to leave school is no surprise. His coach at CC, Scott Owens, said during the season he didn’t expect Sejna to be back next year.

He had 36 goals and recorded a point in 41 of 42 games this season for the Tigers, who lost to Michigan in the Midwest Regional final. For his collegiate career, he had 190 points (91 goals, 99 assists) in 126 games — eighth on CC’s career list.
