{"id":25854,"date":"2003-07-07T18:11:45","date_gmt":"2003-07-07T23:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uscho.com\/2003\/07\/07\/markell-signs-new-deal-at-ohio-state\/"},"modified":"2010-08-17T19:55:29","modified_gmt":"2010-08-18T00:55:29","slug":"markell-signs-new-deal-at-ohio-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwproxy.uscho.com\/2003\/07\/07\/markell-signs-new-deal-at-ohio-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Markell Signs New Deal at Ohio State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio State men&#8217;s head coach <a href='\/stats\/coachYxY.php?cid=35&#038;gender=m' title='John Markell Year by Year'>John Markell<\/a> has signed a new three-year contract to coach the Buckeyes through the 2005-06 season.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxleft\" style=\"width: 102px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"boxjpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uscho.com\/images\/headshots\/osu_markell.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"135\" alt=\"Markell\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"namecaption\">Markell<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to have the chance to continue on here at Ohio State,&#8221; Markell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since I&#8217;ve started, our goal has been to compete for national championships while our players get quality educations. The support we receive from the department and the university allows us to do that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited about the future of our program. We will be able to build on the base we&#8217;ve established the last eight years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In eight-plus seasons at the helm of the Buckeyes, Markell has a career record of 147-146-28. Over the last six years, his record is 123-95-21, including four 20-win seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, Ohio State went 25-13-5, finished third in the CCHA, and earned its third NCAA bid. The Buckeyes fell to Boston College in the semifinal of the NCAA East Regional, 1-0.<\/p>\n<p>Before Markell, OSU had never appeared in the NCAA tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Markell was named as OSU&#8217;s permanent head coach on May 22, 1995, after serving as interim coach for the final nine games of the 1994-95 season.<\/p>\n<p>He was voted as the CCHA Coach of the Year in 1998, when his team won 27 games and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time ever.<\/p>\n<p>Markell is a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio State men&#8217;s head coach John Markell has signed a new three-year contract to coach the Buckeyes through the 2005-06 season.
