{"id":43913,"date":"2012-03-30T09:48:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T14:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uscho.com\/?p=43913"},"modified":"2012-03-30T09:48:53","modified_gmt":"2012-03-30T14:48:53","slug":"report-hockey-east-looking-to-add-connecticut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwproxy.uscho.com\/2012\/03\/30\/report-hockey-east-looking-to-add-connecticut\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Hockey East looking to add Connecticut?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a report in the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.courant.com\/2012-03-29\/sports\/hc-uconn-hockey-0330-20120329_1_freitas-ice-forum-awards-scholarships-uconn\"><em>Hartford Courant<\/em><\/a>, Hockey East representatives visited the Connecticut campus and hockey facilities Thursday, further adding speculation to the rumors that UConn may be joining the conference down the road.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did have a conversation,&#8221; Gov. Dannel Malloy said during an afternoon news conference at the Capitol. &#8220;Clearly, the University of Connecticut is contemplating whether they would want to join Hockey East and Hockey East is contemplating whether they would want UConn to join it. They&#8217;re on a fact-finding mission to understand how serious UConn may be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Per Title IX rules, if UConn were to add 18 men&#8217;s hockey scholarships, 18 would have to be added to a women&#8217;s program. The women&#8217;s hockey team awards scholarships and is already a member of Hockey East.<\/p>\n<p>Also, while games would be played at the XL Center, the Freitas Ice Forum would need a major upgrade, if only for recruiting and practicing.<\/p>\n<p>In December, UConn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscho.com\/atlantic-hockey-blog\/2011\/12\/22\/connecitcut-to-assess-hockey-program\/\">hired a sports consulting firm<\/a> to evaluate men&#8217;s hockey.
