Despite reports that he was leaving to take the head coach position at Massachusetts, Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold is staying put, a source close to the situation said Monday.

Pecknold was offered a lengthy contract with good financial incentives by Massachusetts, according to the source. But Pecknold turned that down as of Monday, the source said.

Quinnipiac made a counteroffer, the source said, and it now appears Pecknold is staying at the only school at which he’s ever been a head coach.

Pecknold has a 337-230-62 record in 18 seasons at Quinnipiac. His 337 wins place him ninth among active head coaches entering the 2012-13 season.

Pecknold could not be reached for comment. A UMass athletic department spokesperson said the school does not discuss coaching searches while they are in progress.
